Chinese VPN vs a VPN that works in China

People type Chinese VPN into Google and get two different products mixed together.

One is an app written for the mainland market, sold in Chinese, sometimes with a domestic ICP trail. The other is a VPN that works in China: a foreigner’s tunnel to Google, GitHub, WhatsApp, and Claude, run from outside the filter.

If you are a visitor, a teacher, or anyone whose work lives on the open internet, you want the second. Buying the first because the search query said “Chinese” is how you end up with an app that cannot reach the sites you flew here to keep using.

What the query actually wants

“Chinese VPN” as geography. A VPN you can turn on *in* China. Hotel Wi-Fi, a China Mobile SIM, a campus network. That is a VPN in China.

“Chinese VPN” as origin. A company based in the PRC, a client in the China App Store, payment only in RMB through a local channel. That can be the right tool for a domestic user who wants a faster route to a game server abroad. It is the wrong tool if you need Gmail to keep existing.

Qiao is the geography product. Built for people who need the rest of the internet while they are here. English, Chinese, and the other site languages. Alipay and WeChat Pay on the website because that is how people here pay, not because the product is a mainland consumer app.

Why origin and geography get confused

App Store search in China is a different catalog. Google Play is absent. Ads for “VPN” on a phone that just landed will surface whatever still installs. Some of those clients are fine for a local user. Many are data-capped, phone-only, or vanish when the hotel AP resets the session.

A foreigner then writes a Reddit post: “Chinese VPN recommendation.” The replies argue LetsVPN vs Astrill vs Express. Those are not the same category as a mainland-store utility. They are attempts at a VPN that works in China, with different failure rates on China Mobile.

What to buy instead of the search-ad

Use the foreigner checklist: install before you land, unlimited traffic, a desktop app, WeChat left local, a refund window. That list is in best VPN for foreigners in China.

Qiao’s paid plans (Voyager and Meridian) are unlimited. No monthly cap, no overage. BitTorrent is blocked. Meridian adds Smart Flow so Alipay does not ride the tunnel to Singapore and back. First day of Meridian in the app does not take a card. First paid purchase has 7 days to unwind.

We keep no browsing, DNS, or traffic contents. Servers are RAM-only. Account email and order records exist because a paid product has to bill.

If you meant “a VPN from a Chinese company”

We are not that. If your requirement is a mainland legal entity and a listing in the China Android stores, look elsewhere and read that vendor’s logs policy in the original language. Do not assume “Chinese VPN” in an English SERP is that vendor.

If your requirement is staying reachable to the tools you already pay for, while you are physically in China, start with the buying guide and install from qiaovpn.com/en/download before you fly.
