Best VPN for foreigners in China (2026)

The best VPN for foreigners in China is the one you already installed, that still has traffic left in week two, and that does not kill Alipay when you pay for lunch. It is not the brand with the most airports on the home page.

If you are visiting, teaching, or living here on a foreign passport, the job is specific: Gmail, Google Docs, WhatsApp, Instagram, GitHub, Claude or ChatGPT, and a company VPN or inbox that does not live on the mainland. At the same time you still need WeChat, Alipay, Didi, and the bank to work like a local phone.

Those two jobs fight each other on a full-tunnel consumer VPN.

What foreigners actually break

They wait until Pudong. The China App Store will not give you Express, Nord, or Qiao. Google Play is not there. Download Windows, Android, and the login on a network that can still reach the vendor. Sign in once at home.

They buy a cap. A “500 GB unlimited*” plan dies after a week of model chats and YouTube. Then you buy a second app, hop IPs, and look like five people. Every Qiao plan is unlimited traffic. That is the line on pricing, not a footnote.

They tunnel WeChat. Voice calls stutter. The QR at the restaurant hangs. You kill the VPN to pay and forget to turn it back on. Meridian’s Smart Flow keeps local apps on the direct path. Voyager is cheaper if you will toggle by hand. Most people who eat here want Meridian. Details: keep WeChat and Alipay fast.

They trust “it connected.” China Mobile hotel Wi-Fi is where Express and Nord drop. You want a desktop app on the same account as the phone, and a session that stays in one country when a node dies.

They run Claude on a noisy exit. IP hops and shared datacenter addresses are a common ban story. One exit, stay on it. Device-wide tunnel, not a browser extension. How to avoid Claude suspension in China.

The best VPN to buy in China, as a checklist

This is the buying list we would hand a friend landing next week:

  1. Installed and signed in before the flight.
  2. Windows and macOS, not phone-only.
  3. Unlimited traffic in writing.
  4. Split tunneling, or you will turn it off to pay.
  5. Payment you can complete from here (Alipay, WeChat Pay, or a card that actually charges).
  6. A refund window you can use if the first hotel Wi-Fi is a brick. Ours is 7 days on the first paid purchase.
  7. A human on the same account, not a dead Telegram.

Qiao is built around that list. Voyager: two devices, every location we operate, unlimited, no-logs. Meridian: four devices, Smart Flow, Ghost, Game mode, optional dedicated IP. Complimentary first day of Meridian in the app, no card.

We do not sell a 90-country map. Locations are the ones in the client. Torrents and other P2P are blocked on every node.

eSIM vs a laptop VPN

A travel eSIM or home-carrier roam is still the least drama for Instagram on a phone for a five-day trip. It does not help a laptop that needs Claude, GitHub, and mail on hotel Wi-Fi. That is the case a VPN for foreigners in China has to win.

If you only need maps and WeChat, you may not need us. If you need the rest of the internet and dinner to keep working, you do.

Pay, then test on the real network

Pay on qiaovpn.com with Alipay, WeChat Pay, or crypto. Google Pay and Apple Pay show on charges of $30 and above. The Android and desktop apps do not take Alipay.

On arrival, try hotel Wi-Fi and the SIM. If it dies, write from the signed-in chat. Email is support@qiaovpn.com.
