Google does not load on the open Chinese network. Gmail, Maps, Drive, and search need a tunnel that keeps moving traffic. A VPN that only wins the handshake will show a blank Google page and a green icon at the same time.
Use Google in China like this:
- Install the app before the flight. The China App Store will not provide it later
- Connect, then open Google once. If it spins, quit the app and switch location
- From 8:00pm to 11:00pm, use Hong Kong or Singapore
- During the day, switch nodes if the current one stalls
- Do not send WeChat Pay through the same path. Pay locally, search on the tunnel
Maps is the one people need in a taxi. If Maps will not tile, you are on a dead flow. Switching location is faster than waiting on the spinner. Install before you fly is the step that makes this possible at all.
